Case Officer / Documentation Specialist

Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is seeking a Case Officer / Documentation Specialist to support documentation of human rights violations and the delivery of core services to victims of injustice. All person passionate about human rights and interested in joining a dynamic, high-impact team of professionals are welcome to apply. This is a full-time position, with flexible work options available.

Duration:             6 months initially, with option for renewal based on performance

Background

Jamaicans for Justice is a non-profit, non-partisan human rights and social justice organization. We provide redress and legal services to victims of injustice in a wide range of areas, we conduct research, policy analysis and advocacy to secure justice, equality and accountability, and we delivery nationwide training and educational programmes. We work heavily on behalf of marginalized people and communities.

Jamaicans for Justice employs professionals with strong commitments to human rights, social justice, and non-discrimination to execute varied redress and legal activities. The Case Officer / Documentation Specialist will provide direct, hands-on support to the management of cases within the Redress and Legal Services Unit.

 

Scope of Work

  1. Document and manage cases, including but not limited to:
    1. Conducting intake of new complaints from various sources (e.g. interviewing persons, receiving referrals, reviewing written correspondence, etc.)
    2. Assessing and documenting pre-existing and historice cases
    3. Evaluating cases in order to make decisions about appropriate services
    4. Entering large amounts of case information into prescribed systems, both physical and electronic
    5. Directly operating digital case management systems and documentation platforms
    6. Digitizing and organizing case files
    7. Preparing detailed and accurate reports as requested
  2. Provide support in ongoing legal matters, including but not limited to:
    1. Preparing documents and other materials relevant to legal proceedings
    2. Conducting basic research and writing
    3. Maintaining correspondence with courts or other bodies
    4. Receiving and actioning instructions from relevant officers
  3. Perform case management functions including but not limited to:
    1. Maintaining accurate case files and current records, especially through electronic systems
    2. Maintaining correspondence with clients and other persons
    3. Supporting investigations of cases through various means
    4. Managing the sending and receipt of documents, material and other packages
    5. Preparing frequent and timely reports as requested
    6. Taking all steps necessary to support the progression of cases
  4. Complete other assignments relevant to case management, organizational compliance, and reporting

 

Qualifications and competencies

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field. Exceptional candidates who are completing studies will be considered.
  • Extremely well organized and attentive to detail
  • Full computer and digital literacy and ability to efficiently work on digital platforms with complete ease.The position involves heavy use of computer systems.
  • High level of maturity, professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and if necessary, remotely
  • Any experience in the legal services sector is an asset.
  • Experience in performing administrative functions is an asset.
  • Experience with documentation systems, data entry, or information management is a strong asset
  • Formal training/certification in paralegal functions is a strong asset
